Season 2011/12

season 2011/12

Dear friends,

Each year at Berkeley Rep, we offer you a compelling collection of plays. We invite artists who inspire us to bring their vision and imagination to our stage. We present work from around the world that we hope will change the way you think about theatre—and the way you think about life. This year is no different.

I am honored to announce the line-up of artists who will join us for the upcoming season, and delighted to ask you to be part of it:

  • First it’s Rita Moreno: Life Without Makeup, a captivating show created specifically for this outstanding actress.
  • Next Bill Cain, the award-winning author of Equivocation and 9 Circles, gives us a poignant new play about caregiving.
  • For the holidays, the creators of Brief Encounter return for a spectacular fairy tale called The Wild Bride.
  • With Ghost Light, a fable about San Francisco, I’m taking the plunge as a playwright and handing the reins to respected director Jonathan Moscone.
  • Then Steven Epp—the star of Figaro and The Miser—returns to unleash another Molière masterpiece with A Doctor in Spite of Himself.
  • In March, Obie Award-winning director Les Waters takes on John Logan’s Tony Award-winning Red.
  • And finally Dael Orlandersmith delivers a fierce and unforgettable performance in the world premiere of Black n Blue Boys / Broken Men.

As an added attraction, we’re offering a special presentation next spring of In Paris, a beautiful romance starring legendary performer Mikhail Baryshnikov. It promises to be another eclectic season at Berkeley Rep, and I’m proud to present it to you.

In the last six years, six shows developed here have ended up on Broadway. Six more landed off Broadway, one moved to London, two turned into films and others have toured the nation. Our success depends on two things: we have a commitment to creating engaging and entertaining work that resonates first and foremost here at home in the Bay Area—and we rely on a curious, adventurous audience to make it possible.

I hope you’ll decide to join us.

Sincerely,

Tony Taccone
